SEO optimization for pages with little content

19 Nov 2009 In: WWW

We all know that the number one rule in SEO optimization is repeating your keyword several times in different text positions on your webpage. But sometimes you just don’t have enough space or content to do this. In this post I will give you 6 tips on how to SEO optimize a webpage with little content.

Check out the screenshot from vunkysearch below to see which areas we are optimizing.

Adjust your Meta Information

Although Google doesn’t really use meta elements anymore, Yahoo and Bing still use it in some of their ranking parts. Also the description and title part is very important for organic web traffic, especially in Google.

Use Search Engine Friendly URL’s

Search Engine Friendly url’s allow search engines to harvest more information about your website from the domain name and url. For instance: If you have a website about Pet Dogs, having a domain name www.petdogs.com with an article about golden retrievers using the SEF url petdogs.com/golden-retrievers, will highly improve your rankings on petdogs and golden retrievers.

Use h1 tags for your main subject

Google interpreters the content inside the h1 tag as the most important subject of a webpage. Try to implement this tag as high as possible with a logical page subject in it.

Use p tags for your content

Just as h1 tags, p tags are also important for search engines. Put your content inside a paragraph. Since you have little text to work with, it is important that the parts you do have stand out to search engines.

Create inner tags for your webpage

Another great tip – which may not always be able apply able – is to add related tags inside your webpage. These tags will point towards index pages where all webpages with that tag will be displayed. Not only do you generate more SEF url’s with this, you also create extra pages of content that get indexed by search engines.

Use title and alt tags on your images

Using title and alt descriptions on your images will allow search engines to better understand the content on your webpage and also allows them to index your images in graphic search engines.

For those of you not so familiar with HTML, I have summed up the tags from above in real world usage .

<h1>Main Subject</h1>
Webpage Content

<img title="Title text" src="image.jpg" alt="Alt text " />
