The Epic Trail of Promoting My Website
26 Nov 2009 Author: admin In: Ruby on RailsIn this small series I will keep you updated on several promotional techniques that I am experimenting with on some of my websites and services. Each post will focus on one method and provide you with some useful tips and stats.
Advertising on BuySellAds.com
The first method to kick this series of with is buying advertisement space through BuySellAds.com. They have quickly become somewhat of an authority on advertising where the webdesigners and programmers hangout.
I have been using them to sell some ad-space on an other website and decided to launch an ad campagne of my own.
On BuySellAds.com you basically search for a website you would like to advertise on. Prices vary with the number of times your ad is displayed and what banner size you are using.
Placing the Ad’s

The most common size is 125×125 pixels and that will usually give you an ad-space on the right side of a website.
We placed our banner on two websites with an estimated total of 8.4 million impressions during a 30 days period. The price for both was about 400 dollars. When you signup for an ad-space you automatically roll into a reoccurring subscription, if you just want to advertise for 30 days, don’t forget to unsubscribe.
After you have paid for your ad space you will need to upload your banner and supply your link. Most of the bigger websites manual approve new ad’s, so it might take a couple of hours before your campagne is active.
Adjusting the Landingspage
At the end of the first week we found the number of click throughs too low, so we added a landingpage more targeted at the incoming visitors. This significantly improved click throughs.
Conclusion
After the 30 day period we ended up with 9,352,456 impressions, 645 click throughs and 26 trial signups.
Followup traffic to the website was minimal. At those rates it was not very profitable.
For next time we might consider spicing up the ad’s and landing page to make them stand out more.
So, not quite the Digg effect yet, on to method number two ;)
